The first message is where most couples in the lifestyle quietly give up. They send a few, get no replies, and assume either there's something wrong with their profile or that the platform doesn't work. Usually it's neither. It's the message.
Here's what actually gets a reply and why.
The message that gets ignored
Most first messages sent on lifestyle sites follow one of two patterns. The first is the generic compliment: "Hey, you both look amazing, we'd love to chat, feel free to check out our profile." The second is the list of questions: "How long have you been in the lifestyle? What are you looking for? Where are you based?"
Neither works particularly well. The compliment tells the other couple nothing about you and looks identical to the other twenty messages they got that week. The questions feel like an intake form rather than a conversation.
Both signal that you haven't really read their profile, or that you have but didn't find anything specific enough to mention. Either way, the couple has no particular reason to reply to you over anyone else.
What actually gets a response
A message that gets replied to does three things. It references something specific from their profile. It says something brief and genuine about you as a couple. And it asks one question, not several.
That's the whole formula. Three or four sentences. You're not trying to arrange a meeting in the first message. You're trying to start a conversation between two couples who might click.
The specific reference is the most important part. Not "we love your profile" but something you actually noticed: they mentioned they're from a specific part of the country, or they listed an interest you share, or their bio said something that made you laugh. One specific thing shows you read it and found something worth mentioning. That alone puts you ahead of the majority.
What to say about yourselves
Keep it brief and human. You don't need to reproduce your profile in the message. One or two sentences that give a sense of who you are as a couple. Where you're from, roughly how long you've been in the lifestyle, what kind of dynamic you're looking for. Enough to make you real people rather than a profile picture and a username.
Avoid leading with what you want sexually. A first message that opens with physical preferences or what you're hoping will happen reads as impatient at best. The couples worth meeting want to know you're good company first. Everything else comes later.
The question at the end
End with one genuine question, not a list. Something that invites a real reply rather than a yes or no. A question about something they mentioned in their profile works well because it shows you were paying attention.
Avoid "what are you looking for?" as your opener. It's the lifestyle equivalent of "so, what do you do?" It's fine eventually but as a first question it's generic and puts the other couple in the position of summarising their entire profile back to you.
Both of you in the message
Messages that feel like they come from both partners tend to do better than ones that read as though one person is handling all the admin while the other barely knows this is happening. You don't need both of you to literally type the message, but writing as "we" rather than "I" and including both your names helps. It signals that this is something you're both engaged in, which is reassuring to the couple receiving it.
How long to wait for a reply
Lifestyle couples are often busy and don't check their messages daily. A few days to a week without a reply is not a definitive no. One follow-up after a week is fine. Two unanswered messages is the limit. If there's no response after that, move on. Sending the same message repeatedly or asking why they haven't replied makes you memorable for the wrong reasons.
When you get a reply
Keep the momentum going without rushing it. Reply in a reasonable time, keep the conversation natural, and resist the urge to push toward a meeting before you've established any real connection. The couples who get to a first meeting fastest are not always the ones who got there best.
Most couples want to feel like they know you a bit before they commit to meeting. A few back-and-forth exchanges, a video call if both sides are open to it, and then a low-pressure suggestion of a casual drink works well for most people.
A note on profiles
The best message in the world won't compensate for an empty profile. If your bio is blank, your photos are poor quality or missing entirely, and your Looking For section says nothing useful, the reply rate will be low regardless of what you write. Before worrying too much about the message, make sure the profile it's pointing toward gives the other couple something to work with.
