The lifestyle has its own language. Some of it is practical shorthand. Some of it is community terminology that signals you know how things work. All of it can feel opaque when you're starting out. Here's every term you're likely to encounter, explained plainly.

A

Aftercare - The physical and emotional support given to partners after an intense or significant lifestyle experience. Checking in, reconnecting, talking about how things went. Borrowed from BDSM but increasingly used in lifestyle contexts.

B

BDSM - Bondage, Discipline, Dominance, Submission, Sadism and Masochism. A separate but overlapping community to the swinging lifestyle. Many lifestyle clubs have BDSM elements or run dedicated fetish nights.

Bull - A man who plays with a hotwife or with couples in a cuckold or stag and vixen dynamic. A good bull understands the dynamic and respects the couple as a unit.

C

CNM - Consensual Non-Monogamy. The umbrella term for any arrangement where sex or relationships outside the primary partnership happen with full knowledge and consent. Swinging is one form of CNM. Polyamory is another.

Compersion - The feeling of genuine pleasure from watching your partner enjoy themselves with someone else. Often described as the opposite of jealousy. Not everyone experiences it but it's common among long-term lifestyle couples.

Cuckold / Cuck - A man who derives pleasure from his partner having sex with other men, typically involving an element of submission or humiliation. Distinct from the stag and vixen dynamic where the male partner's response is pride rather than submission.

E

ENM - Ethical Non-Monogamy. Essentially synonymous with CNM. Both terms emphasise the consensual, ethical nature of outside sexual or romantic connections.

F

Full swap - A swinging arrangement where partners have full penetrative sex with others, not just soft swap activities. The distinction between soft and full swap is something most couples establish explicitly before any encounter.

G

Green light - A signal used in some couples' communication systems to indicate genuine enthusiasm for what's happening. Part of a traffic light system (red, yellow/amber, green) that some couples use to communicate comfort levels during an evening.

H

Hall pass - Permission given by one partner for the other to have a sexual experience solo, without both people present. A specific and emotionally complex arrangement covered in more detail in the hall pass guide on this blog.

Hotwife - A woman in a committed relationship who plays with other men with her partner's knowledge and encouragement. Her partner, the stag, takes pride rather than submissive pleasure in the arrangement. Closely related to the stag and vixen dynamic.

L

Lifestyle, the - The community term for the swinging scene. "Are you in the lifestyle?" means are you active in the swinging community. "Lifestyle couple" means a couple who swings.

Liquidity - Used in discussions of lifestyle sites to describe the critical mass of active members needed for a platform to feel alive. A site with low liquidity has too few active members to feel worth using.

M

MFF - Male-Female-Female. A threesome with one man and two women. Also written as FMF.

MFM - Male-Female-Male. A threesome with two men and one woman. Also written as FMF in some contexts. Sometimes called a DP situation depending on the specific arrangement.

Munch - A casual social gathering for lifestyle or BDSM community members in a non-sexual setting, usually a pub or restaurant. A safe, low-pressure way to meet community members without any expectation of play.

O

OPP - One Penis Policy. A rule some couples have where the female partner can be with other women but not other men. Controversial in lifestyle circles, particularly among women.

P

Play - The lifestyle community's word for sexual activity. "Playing with" another couple means having sexual experiences together. "Play areas" at clubs are where sexual activity happens.

Poly / Polyamory - Having multiple romantic relationships simultaneously, with all parties aware and consenting. Distinct from swinging in that romantic love, not just sexual experience, is part of the picture.

S

Same room - Swapping or playing with another couple in the same physical space, as distinct from separate rooms. Most newer couples prefer same room to begin with.

Soft swap - Sexual activity with others that stops short of full penetrative intercourse. Kissing, touching, oral sex. Many couples start here.

Stag - The male partner in a stag and vixen dynamic. He takes pride and pleasure in his partner's experiences with others, from a position of confidence rather than submission.

U

Unicorn - A single woman willing to join an existing couple for a threesome or lifestyle experience. Called a unicorn because of her rarity relative to the demand for her. Read the unicorn guide on this blog for more.

V

Vetting - The process of verifying that potential lifestyle connections are who they say they are before meeting in person. Includes reverse image searching photos, video calls, and checking for consistency across interactions.

Vixen - The female partner in a stag and vixen dynamic. She plays with other men while her partner, the stag, takes pleasure in that.

W

Wife swap - An older term for what is now more commonly called swinging or couple swap. Two couples exchanging partners. The term has fallen out of favour in the community partly because of its TV association and partly because it implies ownership.
