It's one of the most Googled questions about the lifestyle and it almost never gets a straight answer. So here it is.

Check the club's website first

Before anything else, look up the specific club you're going to. UK swingers clubs vary quite a bit. Some have a strict smart dress code and will turn you away at the door for wearing jeans. Some have themed nights where turning up in regular clothes would make you stand out. Some have a towel policy where you strip down on arrival. A quick look at the club's website or social media takes two minutes and saves a lot of embarrassment.

If you can't find clear guidance, message them. Clubs are used to first-timers asking and they'd far rather tell you what to wear than have to turn you away at the door.

The general rule

If you have no specific information about the club, smart casual for arrival is almost always safe. Think a night out rather than a formal dinner. Dress like you're going somewhere you want to make a reasonable impression.

For women, pretty much anything goes from a fitted dress to something more revealing, lingerie-style outfits or corsets. There is no such thing as overdressed or underdressed at most clubs, within reason. What matters more is that you feel comfortable and confident in what you're wearing.

For men it's stricter. Most UK clubs require trousers and a shirt or at minimum a clean, fitted top. Jeans are borderline at many venues and outright banned at some. Trainers, shorts, football shirts and baseball caps will get you turned away at most places. When in doubt, go smarter than you think you need to.

What to bring to change into

A lot of experienced couples bring a bag. You might arrive in your regular going-out clothes and change into something more comfortable once you're inside and settled. This is very common and most clubs have lockers or changing areas.

For women, a lot of people use the club as a chance to wear something they wouldn't wear in everyday life. Lingerie, a short dress, something sheer. There's no pressure to do this but many women find it adds to the atmosphere and their confidence.

For men, some clubs provide towels once you're inside. Others don't. Bringing a clean dark towel of your own is sensible if the club you're going to has a more relaxed dress code in the play areas.

Themed nights

Many UK clubs run regular themed nights. Lingerie and heels nights are common. Fetish or latex nights exist at some venues. Dress-to-impress nights. Fancy dress. If you're going on a themed night, making an effort to dress for it is appreciated. You don't have to go all out, but showing up completely ignoring the theme when everyone else has made an effort feels awkward.

Practical things nobody tells you

Heels. Wear them if you like them but think about how long you'll be on your feet. Clubs are usually a few hours at minimum and some involve stairs, uneven flooring, or a lot of time standing and chatting. Comfortable heels or bringing flats to change into is sensible.

Clothes that come off easily. Not a requirement, but if things progress during the night, fumbling with complicated fastenings gets old quickly. Most experienced regulars have thought about this.

Don't wear anything you'd be devastated to lose or damage. It's unlikely but things get left behind, drinks get spilled, and changing areas aren't bank vaults. Leave the sentimental jewellery at home.

Underwear matters. Even if nobody else sees it, wearing something you feel good in makes a genuine difference to your confidence on the night.

Body confidence

This comes up a lot and it's worth saying directly. UK swingers clubs are not full of people with perfect bodies. They're full of real people of every shape, size and age who've decided to do something a bit adventurous on a Saturday night. Nobody is standing by the bar rating other people's figures.

The most attractive thing anyone can wear to a swingers club is the same as it is anywhere else: confidence. Wear whatever makes you feel good. If you feel good, it shows, and that matters a lot more than the outfit itself.
